After you kill her in a clear-cut case of self-defense, you can use her home just west of Riverwood as your own player house, provided you're not yet a Thane. The Abandoned Shack is the perfect player home if you want a creepy house in the middle of a swamp that's easy to obtain. Similar to the Companion Quarters, the Apprentice's Quarters is a small home that you gain access to by joining The College Of Winterhold faction. You can easily join this faction by traveling to Winterhold and showcasing your magical talents at the entrance.
Using the above exploit may cause weapon racks to become unusable. Hjerim, Proudspire Manor, and Vlindrel Hall have enough combined bookshelf space between them to hold one of every available book in Skyrim. The homes in Skyrim need to be refurbished once they are bought. The more expensive homes have better options for renovation, but they too are pricey. These additions can include kitchens, alchemy rooms, bedrooms, and storage areas. Players can use homes to gather and display many items as well, from weapons to armor to gold from across Skyrim. Homes can also serve as places to send companions and for other NPC's to find players.

Since the house is located in Raven Rock, it obviously takes quite a bit of time to travel from the house in Solstheim to anywhere back in Skyrim. It's important to note that a spouse cannot move into the house, either. It's very conveniently located in Windhelm, being very close to most of the places you're going to need to visit often. It does take quite a bit of work and time to acquire, but for those who have their heart set on it, they'll get there eventually.
Either way, the plot can only be purchased after completing the quest Laid to Rest. Completing that quest chain will grant ownership of Severin Manor. This house also has no upgrades to purchase since it already has basic storage and crafting benches pre-installed. A smeltery, alchemy station, and enchanting table are included with the home.
Purchasing the House
The Dead Man's Dread doesn't cost anything to unlock, but players must complete the quest titled The Restless. This can be picked up by reading the book The Restless at The Winking Skeever in Solitude. One of the most useful things a player can do in Skyrim is own a home. Becoming Thane of Falkreath is a requirement to obtain this plot of land and can be bought from the steward of the hold for 5,000 Gold. Honeyside can be purchased from the Jarl’s steward for as low as 5,000 gold.
What this sanctuary lacks can be found in nearby Dawnstar such as Smithing and Enchanting, but it does make up for them with its other unique offerings. The quarters slowly regenerate items from potion ingredients, food, equipment, and other consumables. Hjerim has an Arcane Enchanter and Alchemy Lab and boasts the biggest armory among the Vanilla Houses.

Breezehome is one of, and usually, the first houses a player can buy in Skyrim. Breezehome is a small and inexpensive home perfect for new players to use. Conveniently located just beside Warmaiden’s by the entrance gate of Whiterun, it’s perfect when you’re just starting to upgrade your Blacksmithing. At the end of the day, choosing where to set up shop in Skyrim really comes down to personal preference. Most of the houses offer a variety of benefits, but also have their own unique drawbacks. The do-it-yourself types may want to build their own home and live in relative seclusion, while others may prefer to buy a house already made and live in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Riverside Shack, southwest of Windhelm along the White River, has one safe wardrobe and a bed. You can switch back and forth between the Enchanting Laboratory and Children's Bedroom at will. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages. It will cost an additional 6,800 gold to upgrade fully with an alchemy lab and other renovations, or you can just use it as your cheese repository.
A unique aspect of this property is that you have the option of constructing a grain mill, allowing wheat to be converted into flour. Could be caused by having books on said shelf when completing a whole quest line. Taking everything off the bookshelf then exiting and reentering the house fixes this. Might only affect the bookshelf right near the entrance in Breezehome and the Companions quest. Breezehome and Honeyside are smaller, and each less convenient in some ways, but can be obtained much earlier in the game for the majority of players. Therefore, which house is most advantageous will likely depend upon playstyle and personal preference.
